These are the core cards that give investigation points needed to solve the mysteries of the shadow. I wanted to capture some of the key investigation elements, sharpie and with any serious end of times cult, blood is sure to be involved.
We had several artifact cards that contribute lots of research but cost a fair amount to acquire. We wanted to feature the artifact itself and eventually replaced the photos with illustrated artwork.
For the starting research cards we wanted to keep it simple but elegant. Drawing on the idea of agency pens we have a moleskin and fancy pen for taking notes.
You collect talismans throughout the game and we wanted something to go along with the personal case log. So we reused the notebook but added a semi-ambiguous medallion since the shadow scenario you're fighting against varies.
Base block-out of the core colors and shapes.
Adding core shadows and reflections.
Refining the clip shape and body interactions. Feeling out the metal.
Finishing the barrel and tip. Adding grounding shadow.
Blending the details more and refining the ground reflection.
Your commander determines your faction and energizes with your other cards. Each commander has a morale total that is eroded by being overwhelmed on the battlefield. Once your morale is depleted you withdraw from the battle, but the war is far from over.
Every card except your command can be played facedown in your resource row. We wanted the back of the card to communicate that effect.
This is a location card, indicated by the yellow border. Initially played facedown as a resource, locations can be upgrade once you have enough other resources.
Character cards are your soldiers in battle. They have an attack value, in this case 6, and health, 3. You must expend 5 resources to deploy this character and it can only be used with an Ethirian commander.
Tactics can be used from your hand or resources. This is a fairly common Ereman card and you must have at least 2 resources to play it.
Strategies are played from your resource row and you must have at least one other resource to play this Ka'al strategy.
